ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS:

TAYLOR HARRISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND:

The Taylor Harrison Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of local boat builder Taylor Harrison (Taylor Made Boats, Kill Devil Hills, NC) who lost his fight with cancer in 2001. The first tournaments were held to raise money for Taylor’s children’s college expenses. Now, the tradition continues in his memory to provide scholarships for local high school and college students.

OMIE TILLETT SCHOLARSHIP FUND:

In March 2009, the Foundation announced the establishment of The Omie Tillett Scholarship Fund. Captain Tillett was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor in North Carolina, by the Governor for his monumental contributions to the sportfishing and boatbuilding industry in the Outer Banks, as well as for his exemplary service as a citizen in his community. Beginning in 2010, the Foundation will award scholarships in Captain Tillett’s honor to local high school and college students.

WARREN O’NEAL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND:

Warren O’Neal began his boatbuilding career at the age of 15, and went on to found O’Neal Boatworks in 1959 in downtown Manteo. He built the first deep-V hulls, constructed with wooden planks and epoxy glue that became O’Neal’s trademark and were later known as the Carolina design. He built numerous sport fishers, small boats and skiffs, and his boats can still be seen today. It is an honor to preserve his legacy through our scholarship fund.

BUDDY DAVIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND:

In 2011 Dare County Boat Builder’s Foundation established a scholarship fund in memory of renowned boat builder Buddy Davis. The Dare County Boat Builder’s Foundation owes Buddy and his family a great debt, in that Davis boats brought attention to all Carolina-built boats and exposed the world to the Carolina-style sport fish. This scholarship is one way to recognize his accomplishments in the industry and preserve his legacy.
